We woke to the deceptive aftermath of an ice storm this morning. It's hard to capture either the beauty or the difficulty of these conditions in words or pictures. We'd had a modest amount of drizzle, but the ground was very cold and we had the tell-tale rock-hard layer of ice everywhere (about 1/8" today).At 8.30 am, I dashed out to try and make the path and drive a bit less treacherous using some ice-melt (salt). At 8.55 am, Exile #3 and I were waiting for the bus, picking up ice coated leaves, then inspecting the leaf-impression left on the ice when they were separated. I also managed to open the wheely-bin lid in preparation for our refuse collection as it had been iced-shut.
At 9.05 am, I went back to the house (walking on the very crunchy but less slippery grass) to ask Exile #2 to check the school closure listings. Sure enough both the local schools (who provide the bus) and the girls' school were closed.
I managed to get the car very slowly and carefully down the drive and onto the relatively clear roads and get to work. Tomorrow morning may still be a bit interesting as the ice did not melt today (except on salted roads) but we think that temperatures will get above freezing tomorrow.
At the museum yesterday, Exile #4 was doing her special performance - a song with dashing. I'll record the lyrics for posterity:

Engaging but inexplicable. At least she seemed to have safety in mind. Exile #3 joined in wearing a cape. Well, why not?
Fancy dress is all the rage, it seems. Are my clocks set an hour earlier than yours?
ReplyDeleteYes - we like to stick with Daylight SavingS Time at Exile Central. It makes the alarm going off seem less unpleasant in the morning.
