This female pileated woodpecker was the cause of the excitement, Exile #3 declared it to be "So beautiful!" They are striking for sure - 'nearly crow sized' according to Wikipedia and very noisy when they get going on a tree. We have seen them from time to time, but they are certainly not a common sight in the backyard. This one was very obliging, staying while I fetched the camera, changed the lens and opened the window and the storm-pane to get a clear shot (I mean with the camera obviously).
