Day 2.272: Cars and boats

Exile #2 took this picture a week ago to mark an important milestone in E5N1's life - the day he drew his first recognisable object. Well, I say recognisable not because you could say what it is, but because she could - "Did you draw a car?" and indeed he had.

Now that the girls are back at school and so E5N1 has his 'Mom' to himself for some of the day, he is also showing a great love of books. Today, I arrived home to be greeted by him thrusting a book in my hands. His choice tonight was Boats on the River which he chose to take out of the library earlier this week. I then had to read it to him at least three times before we could go back to rejoin the rest of the girls' story time.

Cars and boats, drawing and books - every bit the boy, and growing up fast.

Day 2.271: In Egg-splicable?

I mentioned in passing that the They Might Be Giants gig was in The Egg. Here is a picture of the outside from March for context.

Inside are two theatres and some interesting architectural features as you might imagine:

Also some curious signage.

What is a playbill? A comedy fake duck-beak? An invoice for a board game? A Monopoly dollar? If I find out I will seriously look into recycling mine.

Day 2.270: Surprise? Surprise!

These pizzas were not only square, but gluten-free (for Exile #2) and cow-dairy-free (for me). Does that surprise you?

No?

Yesterday, Exile #2 and I were looking at a very nice article on Time's website about doctored photographs around the kids' bedtime. Exile #4 wandered over to see what we were talking about. We were looking at this one in which two female cabinet members had been replaced by their male colleagues. The original is here. We started to describe how in some places, at some times, women have not been considered as important as men..."Oh, that doesn't surprise me!" she said.

She went on to surprise us when looking at this picture, completely oblivious to any historical or symbolic impact it may have, she said about the man in the middle, "That looks like [teacher's name] - but he doesn't have a moustache."

Yeah!

Day 2.269: M

It's my 1000th post here at Exiles in New York.

News, pictures and amusing stories from today will have to wait. Instead I offer you this record of the last 1000 days (or so*). It's part of the fruit of my labours in tagging faces in Picasa 3.5. There are a couple of rogue faces in there, but but for the most part it's me me me!

* Full disclosure: there was no post on Day 14 and a few of these may have been taken in the couple of months preceding the Exile.

Day 2.268: In black and white

One of the things I've learned as a result of living in this part of the world is to recognise the smell of a skunk. Generally I smell it while I an driving - usually just after or just before I see a small black and white road-kill victim. Today was a bumper commute - one on the way and two on the way back. I don't mind the smell in moderation. And thanks to Alice Sebold's book "The Lovely Bones", which I read recently, I know I am not the only one.

However, Exile #2 noticed that there is a fairly strong smell of skunk in the garage this evening. It may be that my car had a close encounter with a live one on the way home from work this evening. It will need further investigation tomorrow I imagine - the smell is not known for disappearing quickly.

By the way - the black and white animal pictured is a baby giant panda and not a skunk nor if I'm completely honest is it in fact a panda or indeed an animal.
