Day 5.269: Nightmares for the next generation

The kids expressed a desire to watch Doctor Who.  I'm not sure where the desire came from but I didn't push back very much.  My only stipulation was that I was going to watch it with them.  So it has become family-TV time whenever it fits in.

We've started with Season 1 (The Ninth Doctor's season) which is not my favourite, but this evening after dinner we watched my favourite two-parter from that season.  The Empty Child and The Doctor Dances.  So good.  So creepy.  So very good and creepy.

And so it is that I sent my kids off to bed this evening expecting to have nightmares about what they'd seen much as I used to do after the final credits rolled on the Doctor Who of my youth and I emerged from squeezed into my Dad's chair or behind a cushion or, in extreme cases, hiding from the TV altogether - behind the sofa.

Sleep well all!

Day 5.268: Flora and fauna (and fungi)

Here are some of the things we saw on our walk at Five Rivers on Sunday afternoon. They include the two creatures from the mystery photos - so if you still want to play go and look there first before looking here!

Flora first (I suspect fungi count, but if not, they are here too):

So much still to see at this time of year.

And here is the fauna - three frogs, a cottontail, a red squirrel and a red eft (eastern newt):

Day 5.267: Walk to school

The kids celebrated International Walk to School Day today.

It seems that they had fun. E5N1 walked some of the way - maybe just so he could qualify for a sticker when he arrived!

Day 5.266: The Hello Kitty Ninja

I feel like I'm coming down with a cold. Could be better timing with my marathon coming up on Sunday, but it could be worse - at least I can hope to be over it by then.

Anyway, here are the first non-mystery pictures of our rather lovely (if a little soggy) autumnal walk at Five Rivers.

E5N1 says he is a 'trainee ninja" when he does his coat up so it hides his mouth.  He didn't seem to see any irony in being a ninja in Hello Kitty rain boots. Incidentally, it was his choice to wear them (they were Exile #4's last year but she's now out-grown them) and he even chose to point them out to the guy taking the orders when we dashed out to Five Guys on Sunday evening for some late last-minute dinner.

Day 5.265: A mystery or two

Yesterday afternoon, between a rainy morning and a storm evening, we had a dry spell and Exile #2, Exile #3, E5N1 and myself managed a short but rambling walk at Five Rivers (Exile #4 was at a friend's house). I'll post some more pictures tomorrow (or the next day) but for now, here are a couple of not-too-hard mystery photos for you to guess.

You can see it, but what is it?

What nearly evaded me?
