Day 3.084: Early to rise...

Easter sunrise service at the Lincoln Memorial
If you want a closer look this may be your best option.

We wanted to find a church service to attend to celebrate Easter today.  As we have proved previously, finding churches is easy - finding churches that we can live with is a bit harder.  The picture above is of the service we finally decided on for today.  It was a sunrise service starting at 6.30 am in the open air at the Lincoln Memorial.  The setting was spectacular and for the most part the service was great.  Having said that, when E5N1 started getting fidgetty we were not sorry to miss the end of the message by leaving.  The preacher was a bit hard to take for us.

There are some more pictures in the slide-show of the views as the sun rose behind the Washington Monument.

After that, we walked the length of the reflecting pool, revisited the WWII Memorial and then walked in front of the White House and on into the center of Washington D.C. where we found first a great cafe for a second breakfast - good food, reasonably priced and cheerful and friendly staff, perfect! and then a Metro train which took us to the National Zoo.

It is very strange to walk into a zoo and not to have to go through a ticket booth or pay admission.  It was a hot and busy day, but it is a very appealing zoo and we had a nice visit.  By mid-afternoon we were exhausted and returned to the hotel where the kids watched a movie and we booked our next stay.

Here are the pictures:
