We had a packed time in the last full day of my sister and family's visit. The morning's adventure was a trip to the Huyck Preserve where we found that a new trail to the mid-falls had opened.
Considering that all the trails had been closed a year ago and at least one bridge and many trails were compromised or destroyed by the flooding due to Hurricane Irene, it was amazing to find the place if anything more accessible than on our last visit.
The new trail cuts along the side of the gorge until it meets Rensselaerville Falls about half way up. At that point you can admire a better-than-ever view of the falls and then turn back to continue the hike, or...not.
Before I knew what was happening, the kids were scrambling up the falls and I was following them.
We did get some great views, and all made it back down safely to the end of the trail for a last group photo for this trip.
We continued up to the top of the falls by the proper route before turning back the way we came. On the way back we spotted a frog beside the trail. Exile #4 showed off her frog-catching skills gained during nature camp a few weeks ago.
Surprisingly appealing!
