Day 4.087: Fully operational?

E5N1 requested a piñata for his birthday party, so naturally we decided to make one. In the shape of the Death Star (from Star Wars in case you didn't know).

We followed these instructions (basically). Here is our show-and-tell:

  1. Punching balloon hung from the kitchen ceiling.  First layer of (black-and-white) newspaper and flour/water paste.
  2. With completed second layer (coloured newspaper).
  3. With third layer (black-and-white again) and cut-out and reversed disk to form the laser dish.
  4. Covered in grey tissue paper strips.  We joked about using the perfectly coloured duck tape instead - I think that might have beaten even the most enthusiastic party guest!
  5. Finishing touches.  Our spray glitter was a bit too close in colour to the background so we added some detail with paint.  Not perfect, but still quite satisfying.
  6. Hanging in the basement until the party - looking slightly ominous and causing us to start singing the Imperial March every time we go down there.
By tomorrow afternoon it should hopefully have been destroyed - not by a precision shot from a small fighter but by a healthy thwack from a small child with a stick!

  1. Not that long ago in a country far, far away...

It is a period of birthday parties. Exile spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire. During the battle, Exile#2 managed to steal secret plans to the Empire's ultimate weapon, the Death Star, a papier mache space station with enough power to destroy an entire basement. Pursued by the Empire's sinister agents, Princess Exile#3 races home aboard her starship, custodian of the stolen plans that can save her people and restore freedom to the galaxy...
