Day 1.165: Tourism begins at home

We stayed close to home today - using our visitors as an excuse to be tourists in our own city. We visited the Visitors Center (pictured), took a tour, had a nice lunch and then walked the length of downtown to play in the park (I also made the return trip to pick up the car).

I know how you all love a quiz, so here are some mysteries to solve - identify these (feel free to answer all or just one!) - I'll publish answers (or maybe further clues) as and when seems appropriate.

  1. OK, here goes...

The video looks like some sort of amphibious landing craft. Clearly the sort of vehicle used by the founders of Albany in the 17th century.

My intimate knowledge of US warships leads me to believe that the 766 is of course the USS Slater. Unless you've turned the photo upside down and your new refrigerator has a capacity of 99L.

Orleans Rockland must be a reference to a geological theme park in the deep south, and the last picture, somewhat randomly, is a bird - looks like a peregrine falcon, but I guess you don't have those over there?!

  2. The Girl recognised the video immediately. It shows what happened when Albaniana tried to navigate round downtown Albany using SatNav.

Orleans Rockland played left back or central defence for the Albany Alley Cats and Grimsby. Apparently he is named after two New York counties (at either end of the State).

The bird is the original "dead parrot" that inspired John Cleese when he visited the area as Cambridge-SUNY exchange student in 1959
