During the summer, the girls and their cousin decided that this male Northern Cardinal was called 'Chilli' (I didn't ask which of the many spellings they would have chosen). I don't know for sure how many male cardinals visit our feeder, but I can't remember seeing more than one at a time, so let's assume that Chilli really is just one bird.
The birds are welcome at the feeder and to take as much as they want. Squirrels are welcome only on the ground - where they do quite well thanks to the messy eating habits of the birds. They have been known to raid the feeder itself - most recently from the tree that fell in the ice-storm, but in the past also from ill-placed piles of snow. The snow build up is threatening to give them access again, but for now they are prevented from stealing any of the birds' food.
Oh yes, and I watched Super Bowl XLIII this evening. It was a good game - Pittsburgh beat Arizona. Sorry if you thought otherwise.
